Civil Division Engages Users

The Civil Division of the High Court recently held a Court Users Meeting to receive the stakeholders' comments and views and deliberate on how the Division can improve.

The meeting was chaired by the Head of Division, Hon. Justice Musa Ssekaana who expressed gratitude to the team at the Division for being committed in delivering justice to all.

He noted that the Division is in dire need of Judges to handle the numerous cases there including backlog.

The Deputy Head of the Division, Hon. Justice Emmanuel Baguma shared that as at March 31, the Civil Division had 4,615 cases and of which 1,828 were categorized as backlog which is 30 per cent of all cases.

He urged the court users to share ideas on what measures can be adopted on how to reduce backlog and efficiently manage backlog. 

Hon. Justice Baguma noted that the Civil Division has five judges who are overwhelmed by the number of cases in the Court.

Adding that the Division handles different categories of cases including those that need Judicial Review which are time-bound and challenges of enforcement of human rights.

He emphasized that the Judiciary is committed to account to its stakeholders by providing a platform to engage.

The President Uganda Law Society, Counsel Bernard Oundo commended the Division for the decisions that have been regularly churned out. He called for improved partnership with the Society.  

During the question and answer session, the court users urged the Judicial Officers to ensure that stakeholders especially advocates adhere to set timeframes set by Court.
